A Rider's Guide to Offbeat One-Day Motorcycle Rides Around Pune

Escape highway traffic with 9 scenic, offbeat one-day bike rides from Pune. Field-tested routes, road ratings, and navigation tips from 30,000+ km in the Sahyadris.

By Monday morning, I am at my desk writing code, building software systems, and fixing bugs. But on Sunday at 5:30 AM, my routine is simple: push the starter button on my Harley-Davidson X440.

Over the last few years, I have ridden more than 30,000 kilometers on my bike across the Sahyadri mountain ranges in Maharashtra. I have explored everything from the windy mountain roads of the Western Ghats down to the deep valleys near the Konkan border. If you check out my bike rides on Instagram (@krypton.rides) or my landscape photos on (@kolor.splash), you will see that I spend almost every weekend exploring quiet backroads.

And after riding 30,000 kilometers, I learned one clear thing: Google Maps does not understand motorcycles.

When you search for a weekend getaway from Pune, maps will always give you regular car directions:

  • They send you straight into heavy tourist traffic jams at Lonavala toll plaza or Bhushi Dam.
  • They show narrow village mud tracks with big rocks and call them "shortcuts."
  • They do not know about smooth curved roads, open mountain views, or how good it feels when your bike engine pulls easily on a quiet hill climb.

If you are a working professional or an engineer looking to get away from city stress for a Sunday ride, you do not need another tourist guide. You need real road conditions, correct turn cues, and honest ground realities.

1. Pabe Ghat: The Quiet Mountain Road Between Sinhagad and Torna

Pabe Ghat is a narrow, quiet mountain pass that connects Khadakwasla and Velhe. When you ride through it, you get open mountain views with Sinhagad Fort on your left and Torna Fort on your right.

  • How to Reach: Swargate ➔ Khadakwasla ➔ Donje Phata ➔ Skip the crowded Sinhagad road and take the right turn toward Pabe village.
  • Real Road Condition:
    • The road is narrow with older asphalt and some loose gravel near the road edges. It has sharp turns, so use your rear brake smoothly and ride down the slope in lower gears.
    • On my Harley X440, the low-end pulling power in 2nd gear climbs up these steep curves effortlessly without needing extra throttle.
  • Why Go Here: There are almost no cars or buses on this route. Once you reach the top of the pass, turn off your engine. You will only hear the mountain wind and total peace.
  • Chai & Breakfast: Stop at a small village stall at the bottom of the ghat for hot poha and fresh ginger chai.

2. Madhe Ghat: Ride to the Big Valley Edge

Madhe Ghat is a high mountain cliff point past Kelad village. Historically, this is the route through which Tanaji Malusare's body was carried back home to Umrathe.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ NH48 (Satara Road) ➔ Take the Nasrapur exit ➔ Velhe ➔ Kelad ➔ Madhe Ghat point. (Tip: You can also combine Pabe Ghat to reach Velhe directly).
  • Real Road Condition:
    • After Velhe, the road becomes a typical village road. Expect rough patches, small speed bumps, and cows on the road. Keep your speed slow and enjoy the fresh air.
    • The last 3 km before the viewpoint is a dirt track with loose stones. Keep a steady throttle, hold your handlebar lightly, and avoid hitting the front brake hard on loose gravel.
  • Why Go Here: The road ends right at the edge of a huge mountain drop that falls thousands of feet straight into the Konkan valley. During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the clouds come rising straight up from the valley and you can see loud waterfalls all around.
  • Safety Tip: Airtel and Jio networks stop working after Velhe. Download your offline map before leaving Pune.

3. Panshet Backwaters: Peaceful Lakeside Riding

Panshet is well known for its water sports and boat club, but the best riding road starts where the tourist cars stop: along the quiet road that circles around the backwaters toward Varasgaon and Rule village.

  • How to Reach: Sinhagad Road ➔ Khanapur ➔ Panshet Dam ➔ Keep left past the tourist parking to follow the water road.
  • Real Road Condition:
    • The road here is smooth and follows the shape of the water. You are not riding fast; you are just enjoying the flow. You ride under green trees with the clean lake water right next to you.
  • Secret Spot: About 8 to 12 km after the main dam, you will see small open tracks going down to the grassy water edge. You can park your bike right by the water, take off your helmet, and sit in the peace and quiet.
  • Food Tip: Local village food stalls serve freshly made jowar bhakri, pithla, and spicy thecha.

4. Lavasa / Temghar Ghat: The Best Road for Cornering

Lavasa Ghat (the hill climb from Pirangut through Mutha Ghat toward Temghar Dam) has some of the smoothest, best-paved curved roads you can find near Pune.

  • How to Reach: Chandani Chowk ➔ Bhugaon ➔ Pirangut ➔ Mutha Ghat ➔ Temghar Dam ➔ Lavasa Gate.
  • Real Road Condition:
    • The road here is wide and smooth with properly banked turns. If you want to practice smooth steering and good body position on turns, this is the best road near the city.
    • Be Careful: On Sunday mornings, you will see fast riders and cars pushing hard. Always stay strictly in your lane on blind corners.
  • Why Go Here: You do not have to pay or go inside the private town. The ride up the hill and the view of the huge Temghar Dam wall from the top is the best part of the trip.
  • Chai Stop: Small stalls overlooking the Temghar lake serve hot onion bhajji (kanda bhaji) and masala chai.

5. Bedse Caves: A Peaceful Countryside Heritage Ride

Bedse Caves are ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves carved into a hill near Kamshet. They are very peaceful, and you will not see the loud tourist crowds found at Karla or Bhaja caves.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ Old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH48) ➔ Kamshet ➔ Turn left toward Bedse village (~9 km from the highway). Or take the scenic backroad through Paud ➔ Hadshi ➔ Tikona ➔ Bedse.
  • Real Road Condition:
    • Once you turn off the highway at Kamshet, you enter calm countryside with green open fields, narrow tarmac, and village ponds.
    • You can park your bike safely in the village base. From there, a shaded stone staircase with 400 steps takes you up to the caves.
  • What to See: The main prayer hall has massive stone pillars carved with figures of elephants and horses. Because tourist buses cannot fit on the narrow village road, you will often have the entire 2,000-year-old place to yourself.

6. Dhom Dam & Wai Backwaters: Clear Blue Water Under Forts

Dhom Dam is a large dam built on the Krishna River near Wai. For bikers, it is one of the most scenic rides because of its clean blue water and views of Kamalgad and Pandavgad forts all around.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ NH48 ➔ Shirwal ➔ Surur Phata ➔ Turn right toward Wai ➔ Take the bypass road toward Dhom and Balkawadi villages (~85 km one-way).
  • Real Road Condition:
    • While most tourists rush up the ghat toward Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, the road around Dhom Dam remains very quiet. The narrow road curves along the water with almost no traffic.
    • Cruising on the Harley X440 in 4th gear at 50 to 60 km/h with the cool lake breeze is pure relaxation.
  • Why Go Here: You can ride your bike down to the open gravel banks right next to the water. Sit by the lake and enjoy the peaceful view. If you like photography, bring your camera along; the evening light here, which I often share on my @kolor.splash page, is amazing.
  • Food Tip: Stop near Wai town for authentic Wai-style Chulivarchi Misal and roasted sweet corn.

7. Malshej Ghat: Big Waterfalls & Mountain Tunnels

Malshej Ghat (on NH61) connects Junnar to the Konkan plains. It is famous for its mountain tunnels, roaring waterfalls right next to the road, and tall rock cliffs.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ Bhosari / Chakan ➔ Narayangaon ➔ Alephata ➔ Otur ➔ Malshej Ghat (~120 km one-way).
  • Real Road Condition:
    • The ride starts as a fast 4-lane highway up to Alephata, and then turns into a wide, climbing mountain ghat.
    • The road is cut directly into tall rock cliffs with mountain tunnels. Hearing the deep thump of the Harley X440 exhaust echoing inside those rock tunnels is a great feeling.
  • Safety Warning: During monsoon, thick fog can drop your visibility to just a few meters. Keep your headlights on low beam, maintain good distance from cars in front, and watch out for small stones falling on the roadside.
  • Food Stop: Stop at Alephata for spicy Junnar Misal Pav and fresh sugarcane juice.

8. Mahabaleshwar via Pasarni Ghat: Cool Air & High Curves

Mahabaleshwar sits at 4,400 feet, which gives you cold weather and fresh mountain air on a one-day ride from Pune.

  • How to Reach: Pune (Katraj / Khed Shivapur) ➔ NH48 ➔ Shirwal ➔ Surur Phata ➔ Wai ➔ Climb Pasarni Ghat ➔ Panchgani ➔ Mahabaleshwar (~120 km).
  • Real Road Condition:
    • The best part of this ride is Pasarni Ghat starting right after Wai. It is a wide, well-surfaced climbing ghat with open views of Dhom Dam below.
    • As you climb higher, the hot valley air changes to a cold mountain breeze smelling of pine trees.
  • How to Avoid Traffic:
    • Never ride into the main market area or Venna Lake on weekends. It is full of tourist cars and slow jams.
    • Instead, take the quiet backroads toward Arthur’s Seat or visit the old stone temples of Old Mahabaleshwar (Panchganga) before 11:30 AM.
  • Return Option: If you want a different return route, ride via Medha Ghat to Satara, or cross the quiet Mandhardev Ghat ridge toward Bhor.

9. Satara: Kaas Pathar & Kaas Lake (The UNESCO Plateau)

Kaas Pathar is a high red-rock mountain plateau located 25 km from Satara city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its wild monsoon flowers and great views of the Koyna valley.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ NH48 (smooth 6-lane highway past Shirwal and Khambatki Ghat) ➔ Satara City ➔ Climb the twisty Yevateshwar / Kaas Ghat Road ➔ Kaas Plateau ➔ Kaas Lake (~130 km one-way).
  • Real Road Condition:
    • Once you leave the highway at Satara and start the ghat climb, the road has sharp turns, good grip, and a great view of Satara city below.
    • At the top (over 3,500 feet), the road opens onto a wide, flat red-rock plateau surrounded by green forests.
    • If you ride 3 km past the flower plateau, you reach Kaas Lake. This is a clean freshwater lake built in 1875. The road around the lake is quiet, shaded by trees, and perfect for a slow ride.
  • Rider Tip: While August to October is famous for the colorful flower carpets (which require online booking during weekends), visiting Kaas in winter or early summer is just as fun: no crowds, open empty roads, and clear skies.
  • Food & Sweets: Buy Satara's famous Kandi Pedhe on your way back, or stop at a local dhaba for spicy rassa bhakri.

Bonus: Nilkantheshwar Mandir (Davje Dongar): 360° Lake Views

Nilkantheshwar Mandir is an open hilltop temple on Davje Dongar at 3,000 feet, giving you a full 360-degree view of both Panshet and Varasgaon backwaters.

  • How to Reach: Pune ➔ Sinhagad Road ➔ Khanapur ➔ Donje ➔ Panshet-Varasgaon connector road ➔ Davje Village (~48 km).
  • The Ground Reality:
    • Maps will take you to the base of the hill at Davje. From there, the road going up is a rough, steep dirt trail with loose stones.
    • Unless you are on an adventure bike, park your motorcycle in the base parking area and take the 30-minute stone-step walk up the hill.
  • Why It Is Worth It:
    • The hill top has hundreds of colorful, hand-made cement statues showing mythological stories.
    • Sitting on the edge of the hill and looking at the blue waters of both lakes cutting through the green hills is one of the best views you can get within 50 km of Pune.

The 30k-km Sahyadri Rider Checklist

  1. Leave Early to Beat City Traffic: Always cross Chandani Chowk, Sinhagad Road, or Chakan before 6:30 AM. After 8:00 AM, weekend traffic gets heavy.
  2. Download Offline Maps: Deep valleys around Pabe, Madhe Ghat, and behind Panshet have zero phone network. Always download offline Google maps before leaving home.
  3. Carry a Portable Tire Inflator & Puncture Kit: Puncture repair shops are hard to find on rural stretches like Velhe to Kelad or behind Dhom Dam.
  4. Respect the Villages: Slow down near village chowks, schools, and cattle crossings. People in rural Maharashtra are very friendly when you ride safely and politely.
  5. Watch the Corners: Mountain ghats often have loose sand, cow dung, or wet mud washed across sharp turns. Do not lean too hard where you cannot see the corner exit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best short bike ride from Pune under 50 km?

Panshet Backwaters (via Khanapur-Rule) and Pabe Ghat are the top two rides under 50 km. Panshet offers peaceful lakeside riding along the dam water, while Pabe Ghat gives you raw mountain curves with great views of Sinhagad and Torna without any highway toll.

Which route near Pune offers the best road quality for cornering?

Lavasa Ghat (via Pirangut and Temghar Dam) has the smoothest roads and wide curved corners for practicing motorcycle leaning and cornering near Pune.

Can beginners do the Madhe Ghat route on standard road motorcycles?

Yes, but be careful. The road past Velhe through Kelad has broken patches, loose stones, and narrow single-lane sections. Any regular bike can do it if you ride slowly and use good clutch control.

How do you avoid commercial weekend traffic when riding to Mahabaleshwar?

Do not enter the crowded main market and Venna Lake area. Instead, enjoy the high-altitude curves of Pasarni Ghat from Wai, and take quiet backroads toward Old Mahabaleshwar or Arthur's Seat before noon.

Is mobile network connectivity reliable on these rural ghat routes?

No. Mobile network on Airtel and Jio often drops completely in deep valleys like Pabe Ghat, Madhe Ghat, and the far side of Panshet. Always download offline Google maps before starting your ride.
